Duck Rescue

Sponsored by the Green Bay Duck Hunter's Association

The duck rescue process starts with a phone call to our “Duck Central” person, Joe Loehlein at 621-8950.  The phone calls start arriving in April and run through July.  The April/May calls are usually associated with people doing spring cleanup in their yards and discover a duck nest near shrubbery.  The Mallard ducks will lay their eggs on the east, south, or west sides of homes in the Green Bay, Wisconsin metropolitan area.  The Mallards prefer to lay their nests in cedar chip landscaping material or landscaping rock.

When the phone call is received Joe records the date, the street address, the phone number, and the name of the contact person.  One of the duck rescue personnel will visit the site and will generally fence in the nest site so predators do not disturb the nest.  The duck rescue personnel will also band (banding done in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Wisconsin Department on Natural Resources) the hen mallard on one of their visits to check the progress of the hatch.  Once the ducklings hatch duck rescue personnel will pick up the ducklings and the hen mallard and take the duck family to a wetland area to release the Mallard family.

Duck nests can be hidden extremely well.  Duck Rescue does not have all the nest sites located.  So it is common to see a Mallard family waddling through a neighborhood.  If you see a Mallard family looking to find water please call "Duck Central" Joe Loehlein at 621-8950.  When the Mallard family is out and about the family is very susceptible to predation by crows and other predators.  Please have someone keep an eye on the mallard family until duck rescue can have personnel on the scene.  We may need your help in gathering the ducklings and trapping the hen mallard.
